Pinterest Something Went Wrong With The Image Upload. Try Again?

How I fixed Pinterest Error "Oops we could not fetch the image"

This is a bit off topic for this blog, but I want to postal service information technology because it just may aid y'all.

Almost 3 weeks ago I was on one of my niche blogs checking things out and testing functionality.  I decided to pin an image, but couldn't.  An error bulletin popped upwardly "Oops Sad we could non fetch the image."

This was alarming because that niche site has a lot of images.  I have a big Pinterest following in that niche.  Pinterest is an of import piece of the entire project.  In fact, readers were contacting me saying "I tin't pin your images".  When you starting time to lose visitors, that's a large problem.

My solution for fixing this pertains to websites with the following:

  • Images are hosted on Amazon CloudFront
  • The website in question has an SSL certificate.

Therefore, if your site is not similarly configured, my solution is not probable going to aid.  I read every commodity and web log post on this issue when it arose and at that place appears to be more than one reasons the outcome tin can arise.  My solution worked for a very specific site gear up upward (i.east. Amazon CloudFront hosted images and SSL document installed on my website).

Video Steps You lot Through What I Did (once I diagnosed the problem)

The problem arose for me when I migrated my site's media to Amazon Cloudfront.  At the very same time I installed an SSL document.  Therefore, information technology was not easy diagnosing the problem… was it the SSL certificate or was it an outcome with the images being hosted on Cloudfront.

It turned out information technology was both.  In fact, the solution involved one click of the mouse.

In a nutshell, all I had to do was change my Amazon CloudFront Distribution settings regarding the SSL document.  Initially I had "Custom SSL Certificate" selected.  When I switched information technology to "Default CloudFront Certificate" the problem was solved.

Here'due south a screenshot of the setting that fixed the outcome:

Amazon AWS Cloudfront Settings for SSL Certificate text

Warning: I stock-still this upshot with the aid of Amazon AWS support.  I strongly suggest that you do not go in and make changes to your CloudFront account unless you know what you're doing or are doing under the guidance of someone who knows what they're doing.

The commencement step to fixing the consequence:

Yous need to diagnose what the problem is.  That was my biggest frustration.  Without knowing what's causing the problem, it's incommunicable to know which service can aid prepare information technology.

Initially I contacted my web host, Pinterest, my SSL certificate issuer and Amazon AWS back up (I paid the $149 per month support fee to get support).  On the first round of support requests, considering the cause of the problem wasn't diagnosed, nobody could help.

In fact everyone except Pinterest said "oh it'due south a trouble with Pinterest."  I didn't recall so.  I had a hunch it had to practise with the SSL document and Amazon CloudFront.

How I diagnosed the problem:

I created a page on the site in consequence and uploaded 3 images.

  • One image I switched to an http source (instead of the https for the SSL certificate).  This prototype pinned just fine.
  • 1 image I uploaded from the Amazon S3 bucket not on the Cloudfront (kept the https though).  This prototype pinned just fine.
  • One prototype I uploaded in the format that was causing the problem.  This epitome did NOT pin resulting in the "Oops sorry we could not fetch the image."

This told me the issue was tied to a setting on Amazon CloudFront and the SSL document.

I submitted these findings to the Amazon AWS support rep and he immediately knew how to fix it, which was to change the Distribution Settings as pictured above.

If you lot have a similar trouble, I promise this helps yous go it stock-still.
